georgia.newkirk@coastalcommunityaction.com The Senior Companion Program provides service to seniors in Craven, Carteret, Jones, Pamlico and Lenior Counties and is sponsored by Coastal Community Action, Inc. in Newport. The program is funded through Federal and local funds.Eligibility: Individuals served by Senior Companions will be adults, primarily older adults, who have one or more physical, emotional, or mental health limitations and are in need of assistance to achieve and maintain their dignity and highest level of independent living. Referrals are made through local agencies, such as Dept. of Social Services, Home Health or Hospice, Craven Regional Medical Center or senior service programs. Seniors needing Senior Companion services may contact the Senior Companion Program Office. The Program Supervisor reviews the care plan submitted by the referring agency. A home visit is made and the client is asked to sign a letter of agreement before the companion begins the home visits. Services rendered by a companion: Will drive client to DR’s office, a friend’s home, or on errands Fix a light meal and eat with client Assist client with some of his/her personal care. Encourage client in an exercise program and to take their medicine. Read to client or simply talk and pass the time of day. Will spend up to 4 hours per day with a client. Respite for caregiver. Companions are not nurses or maids. No hands on care or heavy cleaning. The service is free
