The signs that may indicate dementia or possible Alzheimer’s Disease should not be ignored or avoided. Many times these symptoms can be caused by other problems which could be treated.

Changes which should require a physician’s examination:

            1. Change in behavior.

            2. Memory loss

            3. Not taking care of self.

            4. Becoming confused and disconcerted if at another place.
 

The above symptoms may not be due to Alzheimer’s Disease but other treatable conditions such as:

            1. Vitamin B12 deficiency

            2. Thyroid elevation or deficiency

            3. Depression

            4. Lowered sight and hearing

            5. Interaction of medication and herbs

            6. Non malignant meningiomas of the brain, which can be removed.

            7. Social isolation

            8. Multiple mini strokes
 

Routine that physician will use to determine cause of dementia.

            1. Cat scan

            2. Blood work

            3. Mini mental status exam

            4. Complete physical exam
 

If you become lost frequently and are confused and doctor can give no reason for these symptoms, you should seek a 2nd opinion.
