Communicating with Alzheimer's Patient

Communication Hints from Caregivers
Attending The Homeplace Alzheimer’s Support Group

1) Keep it simple

2) Don't forget to talk!  Don't just sit ...

3) Don't avoid conversations - even if they don't respond, they still might hear and

understand.   They just might not be able to come back with a reply.

4) Go where they are - talk about their past, their interests

5) Take letters from family members or friends, read them aloud and talk about them.

6) Don't argue and don't get emotional (sometimes hard not to do,  but necessary )

7) Remember, they have to focus, they can only pick up about 1 out of every 4 words - so

you may find yourself having to repeat what you have said.

8) Look right at patient, maintain eye contact.

9) Patience!  Take a deep breath - it's not their fault

10) If the patient can speak (or has spoken in) more than one language, use that language

once in a while.  If you can't speak it, find someone that can and take them with you

when you visit your loved one.
