Parents who desire to obtain a GED or learn English as a second language and have a child or children between the ages of birth to 5 years can use this program to advance themselves and their family.

The Craven County Family Literacy Program is an Even Start Program within the Craven County School System that partners with Craven Community College and Smart Start.  There are two Family Literacy sites in Craven County.  One is at Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary School and the other at James W. Smith Elementary School in Cove City.  Each village is made up of classrooms which provide developmentally appropriate education for infants, toddlers, and Pre-K children, along with the adult education classroom and parenting center.

Hours for Family Literacy Students are 8:00AM – 2:45 PM
Monday thru Thursday.
Both parent and the child must be in attendance
Bus Service available within School District. 
Breakfast & Lunch provided
There is no charge for this program

1. Prepare for a GED
      Improve math, reading, writing, science and social
      skills.
      Practice good study habits, effective communication
      skills, and develop computer skills
2. Learn English as second language.
3. Parent & child together time (PACT)
       Interaction between parent and child in child's
      environment each day.
4. Parenting Class
       Reading and listening to child, discuss positive
       parenting techniques, learn from community
       speakers, learn how to have fun with your child
       and family

1. Environments designed specifically for infants and
    Toddlers, 2s and 3s, with an appropriate instruct-
    ional curriculum for each age group

    to prepare children for kindergarten.
