Communicating with Alzheimer's Patient

Communication HInts

Symptoms:

            1. Memory Loss

                        - Will not remember or write “it” down to assist the memory.
                        - Gets lost.
                        - Forgets to turn off stove.
                        - Sudden disorientation and panic attacks.
                        - Confusion or mistakes in their daily chores
                        - Anxiety.

            2. Depression

                        - Sometimes occurs 6 mos. to a year before memory loss begins.
                        - Mood swings
                        - Attention deficit

            3. Insomnia

            4. Appetite disturbance

            5. Fatigue
 

Problems which prevent early intervention or assistance:

            1. Cover-up syndrome.

                        -Well spouse will cover for the failing spouse.

            2. Co-morbid situations (pre-conditions).

                        - Alcoholism.
                        - Amputations.
                        - Disabilities.
                        - Chronic illnesses.

Psychiatric Intervention:

            1. Medication only helps 25-50 % of very early Alzheimer’s patients.

            2. Talking therapy with patient and family is helpful

            3. Behavioral therapy.

                        - Modify home.
                        - Modify family reaction to patient’s actions.

            4. Guidance to family and care of sole caregiver is main concern.
