Home Care: A Popular Alternative

The majority of caregivers would like to be able to keep their loved ones as close to them as possible. It’s a way to gain better control over their care and studies show that loved ones fair better in familiar surroundings. However, giving care in the home can be a little overwhelming while trying to keep up with life’s other responsibilities. Home care may be the answer.

Home care is not limited to nursing care and Physical Therapy, but may include homemaking services such as food preparation, companionship, doing laundry and housekeeping.

The following ten questions should help you get started on your quest to find the best and most affordable home care available. Remember, home care does not mean that you can not handle it anymore. It does mean that you recognize your limitations and you need help. Home care lets loved ones maintain some independence while allowing you to maintain your sanity.

What to look for in a Home Care Agency!

  • Does the agency provide the services your loved one needs?
  • Does the agency provide continuity of care?
  • Will the same caregiver or team be involved for the duration of the care plan?
  • Are the care recipients and family caregivers included when the agency develops or changes the care plan?
  • When is the agency accessible?
  • Is someone available to assist you and your loved one to answer questions after hours or in an emergency?
  • How long has the agency been in business serving the community?
  • Does the provider have a good reputation and positive track record?
  • Are caregivers employees of the agency and how are they screened?
  • If you don’t like a caregiver, can you request a different one?
  • Are caregivers insured and bonded?
  • Can caregivers drive to an appointment if necessary?
  • What is the cost? Are there any hidden charges?

The entire family must take a proactive role in seeking out educational and support resources and accepting the family's reconfiguration. This journey will be easier and more productive when everyone concentrates on where you are going, rather than on where you have been!
