Do you know someone who needs help with their
reading, writing or English speaking skills?

Call The Craven Literacy Council !

About Us:       The Craven Literacy Council, founded in 1986, works to improve literacy by providing free individualized tutoring services to residents of Craven, Jones and Pamlico counties to help them reach their full potential as individuals, workers, parents and citizens.  Grants and donations enable the Council to provide services and materials free of charge.

The Need:       More than 18,000 adults in our area are functionally illiterate.  In addition, there are approximately 4,000 Spanish-speaking residents of Craven County, many of whom speak little or no English.  For these people, everyday activities like filling out job applications, applying for government services, paying bills or making change for purchases present impossible challenges.

Our Service:   Any resident of Craven, Jones and Pamlico counties can request a trained tutor to help improve reading, writing or English-speaking skills. Tutors and students meet once or twice a week at a convenient time. Each student receives an individualized curriculum, based on his or her unique ability and goals, designed to help improve reading, writing and
English-speaking skills.

Our Students: Our students are a diverse group: factory and service workers, teens, housewives and farm workers. They often are referred through a family member or friend. They do, however, share one goal; they want to improve their reading, writing and English-speaking skills.

Our Tutors:      Our tutors are volunteers who take a training workshop that teaches them how to work with adult learners. No special skills are required. A love for reading and the desire to help someone, coupled with the techniques learned through the workshop, are the only requirements for being a great tutor.
