WHO ARE WE? The New Bern Children’s Developmental Services Agency (CDSA) is part of the North Carolina Early Intervention Program. The CDSA focuses on infants and toddlers under three years of age who have or are at risk for developmental delays. Our mission is to support the family in addressing the special needs of their infant or toddler and to provide supports and resources to enhance the development of the child. We serve children and families in Carteret, Craven, Jones, Lenoir, Onslow and Pamlico counties. WHAT DO WE DO? The CDSA specializes in health, growth, development and learning of infants and toddlers in their home or child care setting. A team of professionals from a variety of disciplines works closely with the family to evaluate the child’s development and determine if special help is needed. Together, the CDSA team and family will decide what kind of resources may be needed to assist the child and family. CDSA staff will link families to appropriate community resources. The areas of development that the professionals may look at include: hearing and vision; physical growth and nutrition; ability to understand and use language; thinking skills; movement and play; social interaction with other children and adults; and self-help skills. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? The CDSA provides evaluation services at no cost to the family, however private insurance or Medicaid may pay. Other services that the child and family may need after evaluation, such as therapies, do have a cost and can be paid for by private insurance, Medicaid, and parent fees on a sliding scale. WHO CAN REFER A CHILD FOR OUR SERVICES? Parents, other family members, school systems, health care providers, day care and early childhood programs, or other agencies serving children and their families can make a referral to the CDSA for children under three years of age.
