ARE YOU OK?

City of New Bern
252-633-2020

This service is provided by the city of New Bern’s 9-1-1 Communication Center, which has a computerized system that will call you daily at a designated time of day.

Are You OK?  provides daily telephone contact for those elderly citizens who live alone and who have little contact with others throughout the day.

This service is free to those living within the city limits of New Bern.

To obtain this service you must call 633-2020 and speak to the manager of the “Are You OK?” program.  The manager will make a home visit and ask for the following information:

            1. Names and telephone numbers of 2 people who have keys to your home.

            2. Doctor’s name and phone number.

            3. Where do you keep your medications?

            4. Name and number of emergency family contact.

            5. Small medical history.

            6. Do you drive or who drives your car?  Also tag number.

            7. Location of hidden key if one is hidden.

The automated program will call you daily at your specified time.  When you answer the telephone and hang up, you are acknowledging that you are OK.  You can not have an answering machine connected to your phone.

If you do not answer the phone after approx 8 rings, the system will try a second time.  If no answer, the system alerts the Communication Center personnel, who then call one of the responders who have a key.  If the responder believes there is a problem, the police will respond.

In case of hurricanes or floods, all clients are contacted to see if they will be staying in their homes or going to be with someone.
